Practical answers for cruisers preparing sails for the Andaman Sea and the Malacca Strait.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cruising Sails

What Dacron weight should I choose for a 38-foot cruising yacht?

For a boat in that range, a 7.5 oz Dacron is a solid starting point for the mainsail and genoa. It balances durability with enough flexibility to hold shape in the light airs common around Langkawi and the Andaman islands. If you often sail in stronger monsoon breezes, consider 8.5 oz for the mainsail to reduce stretch over time.

How do self-tacking jibs behave in shifty coastal winds?

A self-tacking jib on a standard track makes each tack predictable because the sail finds its own angle. In shifty conditions near headlands, you still need to ease the sheet and watch the telltales, but the system removes the need to run forward. It is a practical choice for a crew of two or a solo sailor.

What should I look for in a sail bag for tropical humidity?

Choose a bag with a coated interior or a waterproof base, since damp lockers are common in Malaysian marinas. Look for reinforced handles and a wide opening so you can pack a full-batten mainsail without forcing the battens. A bag with a vented panel helps the sail dry faster between passages.

Are low-friction halyards worth the extra cost for weekend cruising?

Yes, especially if you raise and lower the mainsail often. A low-friction halyard reduces wear at the masthead sheave and makes hoisting easier with a winch. For a weekend cruiser that sails every couple of weeks, the smoother action also means less strain on the clutch and a cleaner drop when reefing.

How do I know if a genoa is a good match for my furling system?

Check the luff length against your headstay measurement and confirm the sail has a UV cover on the leech. A 110% overlap works well with most standard furlers because it leaves enough clearance for the forestay and keeps the sail balanced when reefed. If your furler has a foam luff, ask about a matching luff pad to keep the shape smooth.

What repair kit should I carry for a weekend passage?

Carry a kit with sail tape, a curved needle, waxed twine, and a few patches of the same Dacron weight as your sails. Add a small tube of UV-resistant adhesive for chafe points near the spreaders. That covers most tears you will meet on a short passage, and it fits in a cockpit locker without taking much space.

If your boat has a non-standard mast or boom, send us your rig measurements and we will confirm the right sail configuration before you order.
